Growing together

Term 4 dates and venues, our plan with Caloundra FC for 2027, player success stories, the UK Experience 2027, and an idea we need your help with.

Welcome to the first EliteEdge newsletter. Our WhatsApp groups carry the day-to-day news: session times, wet-weather calls and venue changes. This newsletter covers the bigger picture: where the Academy has come from, where it is heading, and the players and families who have made it what it is.

01 · The EliteEdge journey

From a few small groups to a real football community

EliteEdge began in 2023 with one idea. Young players improve fastest when someone pays attention to them as individuals: their technique, their decisions, their confidence and their mindset. We started with small groups on the Sunshine Coast and kept the numbers small on purpose, so that every player got coached rather than just supervised.

Since then, more than 300 players have trained with us across the Academy, one-on-one sessions, school and club programs, and our High Performance Player Camps (HPPC). Many families have stayed with us term after term, brothers and sisters have followed, and the parent community has grown into a network that looks out for each other's kids.

Our groups are growing too. Term 3 ran over our 16-player cap on both Monday and Wednesday. For Term 4 we are back to two Academy groups on each of Monday and Wednesday, alongside the three Friday HPPC Academy groups. Thank you for trusting us with your players. None of this happens without an amazing group of players and families.

02 · Term 4 and the Caloundra FC plan

Two venues this term, a permanent home ahead

Term 4 runs for 10 weeks, from Monday 5 October to the week ending Sunday 13 December 2026.

Term 4 venues: please note the change after week 3

We start Term 4 at Caloundra FC. From week 4 (Monday 26 October) we move back to Currimundi for the rest of the term. Sunshine Coast Council is taking over the Caloundra FC facility and the pitches are being renovated, so we will not be on them for the second half of the term.

The plan for 2027

Train together, then play together at Caloundra FC

We want EliteEdge players who are ready for competitive football to have a club where they can play together. In 2027, Academy players will be able to trial into Caloundra FC teams made up of EliteEdge players, keeping the same standards and the same coaching language they train with during the week. Caloundra FC has committed to the partnership for 2027. Trial dates will be announced once Council's handover of the facility is confirmed.

The move to Honey Farm Road

Caloundra FC moves to the new Honey Farm Road Sport and Recreation Precinct at Meridan Plains in March 2027, and EliteEdge moves with the club. That gives the Academy something it has never had: a permanent, lit home, so our Monday and Wednesday Academy groups can keep training under lights through the winter terms (Terms 2 and 3) of 2027.

03 · EliteEdge IDPs

An Individual Development Plan for every player, starting this term

Measured rather than guessed. Every player gets a clear picture of where they are and what to work on next.

From Term 4 2026, EliteEdge players will receive an Individual Development Plan (IDP). It is a written, player-specific plan built from what our coaches see in training and games. It grows out of the IDP system we built and ran with Sunshine Coast Grammar School, now developed further with what we have learned since.

The four corners of development

Technical: ball mastery

First touch, passing and receiving, running with the ball. Time on the ball drives the fastest progress.

Psychological

Confidence, focus, resilience and the habits that help players learn and show up every session.

Social

Communication on the pitch: asking for the ball, encouraging teammates, giving useful information.

Physical

Fitness, speed, agility and mobility, built alongside the ball work rather than separate from it.

What players and parents receive

  • A progress report showing where your player is now and how they have moved since their last one.
  • A personal training plan with two or three priority areas, and practice videos to use at home. Many of them come from our Academy Skills Sequence library.
  • Developed further: players are also rated against their position and the moments of the game (in possession, out of possession and the transitions), on a clear 1–5 scale, with regular reviews so progress is tracked term by term.

Xander's story: from the Red Zone to the Queensland Metro program

Xander's path is not a straight line. It is a series of opportunities, some of them well out of his comfort zone, and a habit of turning up and working at every one.

Red

Stretched so far it is uncomfortable.

Amber

Stretched, but manageable. The zone to be in.

Green

Too comfortable. Limited growth, because nothing is pushing you.

Dan coaches with these three zones in mind, and they are how we organise our Monday, Wednesday and Friday HPPC groups: every player should spend most of their time in Amber.

  1. 2021 · Caloundra FC, U9His first football club, playing in his own age group.
  2. 2022 · Buddina FC (Churches Soccer), U11sAged 9, playing two years up.
  3. 2023 · Caloundra FC, U13sAged 10, playing three years above his age group. This was the Red Zone.
  4. 2024 · Kawana FC, U13sAged 11, still playing up, and still holding his own.
  5. 2025 · Coolum FC, U13sMoving into the Amber Zone: competitive, confident and ready for the next step.
  6. 2026 · Wynnum Wolves FC, U14 · League 1A step into League 1, opened up through Dan's connections and earned on the pitch.
  7. 2026 · Football Queensland U14 Metro Cup and U14 State EventRepresenting at FQ level.
  8. 2026/27 · FQ Academy Emerging Program, Queensland MetroSelected into Football Queensland's Emerging Program.

Growing in the Red Zone

Some of Xander's biggest lessons came from being in the Red Zone: playing against boys up to three years older, bigger, faster and stronger. Those games were hard. They were also where he learned the most, because he had to think and move quicker just to stay with them.

What moved him forward was not one big moment but consistency. He kept learning technique at EliteEdge and HPPC training and kept doing Dan's regular training drills at home. Slowly the gap closed and he moved into the Amber Zone, where he was no longer just surviving at the higher level but competing in it. When Dan's connections opened doors, Xander was ready, and he worked hard at every opportunity he was given.

“It’s not just about keeping your football skills through regular personal training, but having the mindset to learn and show up at every opportunity you get. Always give that little bit extra. Having parents that go through your good games and the bad ones and keep you positive also really helps.”

05 · HPPC × FTIFA UK Experience 2027

Sixteen nights inside a professional English football environment

Depart Brisbane Wednesday 24 March 2027 · home Sunday 11 April 2027 · ages 10–17, boys and girls, outfield and goalkeepers.

Together with the Fleetwood Town International Football Academy (FTIFA), we are taking a group of players to Lancashire, England. Players stay at the Fleetwood Town FC Village and train on Fleetwood's own training ground at Poolfoot Farm with Fleetwood's academy coaches. The program includes eleven training days, five fixtures against English teams, professional matches most evenings, and objective testing on arrival and again in the final week, so each player's improvement is measured rather than guessed.

It is not a trial and it does not promise selection or a contract. What it does give players is an honest measure of the standard, and the motivation and direction that come from seeing it up close.

06 · An idea we need your help with

An all-weather home for youth sport on the Sunshine Coast

“Don’t let reality get in the way of an incredible dream!”

Every EliteEdge family knows the two things that cost us sessions: wet weather and winter daylight. The Coast is also short of indoor sport space. Clubs and families across many sports feel it, not just football.

So we have started working on an idea: a privately run, indoor, all-weather multi-sport centre, with a synthetic football pitch at its heart. EliteEdge and HPPC would be the anchor programs, and adult social leagues would help pay for it. A multi-sport court would serve basketball and other sports. It would be a place where young people can train properly all year round, whatever the weather.

A small group is already working to make this dream a reality. It is early days, and an idea like this only happens with the right people around the table.

Want to be involved, or know someone who could help? Talk with Dave or Dan. We would love to hear from people in the EliteEdge and HPPC community with experience or connections in commercial property, construction and fit-out, planning and council approvals, finance and investment, sport administration, grants, or marketing. Even a single introduction can move something like this forward.

Thank you for being part of EliteEdge. We are proud of how far we have come together, and even more excited about where we are heading. See you at training.
